In 2009/10 United Way Melbourne made the following grants out to community organizations

Thanks to your generous support, the following projects are now underway across Victoria.

Education


Breakaway Camps Inc
Funding of the GME Commercial Two Way Radio Equipment for activities that support disadvantaged youth. The program is a long term mentoring program where leaders come alongside young people through the most influential years of their life.


Irabina Early Intervention Program
Irabina received assistance for their community playground which will be specifically designed for kids who are autistic. Emcompassing fine and gross motor skills, sensory issues and providing winding paths to explore and encourage independence.


Skyline Education Foundation Australia
Funding to cover the cost of the 2010 March weekend residential workshop at Grantville Lodge including transport, accommodation, meals and delivery of workshop sessions. Funding also paid for the cost of running the four full day workshops delivered to participants.


Ardoch Youth Foundation Limited
Funding provided for the appointment of a Transition Project Worker to improve attendance and school retention by giving each student access to support programs including tutoring and mentoring, job readiness programs and alternative education pathways.


Income


Job Support Inc
Partial seed funding for a new Melbourne service was provided. Job Support is the only service in VIC to specialize in clients with sever intellectual disabilities and high support needs and is skilled in dealing with specific problems with this client group (difficulty with travel, poor communication skills, poor grooming etc).


Eastern Emergency Relief Network
Funding was provided for the purchase of food and other items supplied to the various groups of people they support. The Network helps people who have experienced trauma or loss, who need to move or who cannot afford basic living requirements or who are struggling to buy essentials.


Housing for the Aged Action Group Inc
The funding provided will assist low income older renters, under the ACHA program, to move from their current accommodation. Funding helped with such things as removal costs, storage, assistance to pack or rent in advance that enables someone to take up a housing offer.


Health


Alfred Health – Sandringham Hospital
Sandringham Hospital was funded to purchase a Bilisoft Phototherapy Unit.  This provides treatment for jaundice in babies, while they are being nursed in an open cot by the mother’s bedside.


Windermere Child and Family Services Inc
CALD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) communities. The funded project will educate and resource CALD women and men to take a leadership role (with the support of their respective community leaders) in informing newly arrived migrants to the South East Region of the legal system in Victoria in relation to family violence. The project will support the education into family violence and help to create social change.


Interchange Northern Region
The project is to support respite packages for families with a child with disabilities. This is a lifeline for families. When families gain a respite package, they are able to decide when and how they receive respite.


P2: People and Parks Foundation
The project funded will help link schools for children with special needs to their Caitlin’s Retreat program. The Caitlin’s Retreat facility offers access to nature and education about the environment for young people with disabilities through a range of activities.


Eastern Health
Eastern Health funding was given to support young people with mental health issues to participate in challenging and fun recreational activities. The activities will be made available to participants in the CAMH intensive group therapy program.
